Snoring, Sleep Apnea & Sleep Disorders | Times of India Article

Sleep is not merely rest — it is one of the body’s most essential biological functions.
When sleep becomes disturbed, fragmented, or chronically inadequate, the effects are often felt far beyond the bedroom.

Persistent sleep disorders can affect:

  • energy levels
  • concentration
  • memory
  • workplace performance
  • emotional wellbeing
  • cardiovascular health
  • relationships and family life

Many patients dismiss symptoms such as snoring, daytime fatigue, poor concentration, morning headaches, or restless sleep as “normal stress.” In reality, these may be warning signs of an underlying sleep disorder requiring medical evaluation.

Snoring is Not Always Harmless

While occasional snoring may appear benign, persistent loud snoring can sometimes indicate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) — a condition in which the airway repeatedly narrows or collapses during sleep, interrupting normal breathing and oxygen flow.

Untreated sleep apnea has been associated with:

  • excessive daytime sleepiness
  • hypertension
  • cardiovascular disease
  • poor work productivity
  • metabolic disorders
  • impaired quality of life

In many patients, anatomical problems within the nose and throat contribute significantly to airway obstruction during sleep.

Common Sleep Disorders

There are several important sleep-related disorders encountered in ENT practice, including:

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Repeated pauses in breathing during sleep caused by upper airway obstruction.

Chronic Snoring

Persistent vibration of upper airway tissues leading to disturbed sleep quality for both patient and family.

Insomnia

Difficulty falling asleep or maintaining sleep despite adequate opportunity for rest.

Restless Leg Syndrome

An uncomfortable urge to move the legs, especially during periods of rest or nighttime.

Narcolepsy

A neurological condition associated with excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep episodes.

The Role of ENT Evaluation

ENT assessment plays a vital role in identifying structural causes contributing to sleep-disordered breathing.

Evaluation may include:

  • nasal airway examination
  • assessment of tonsils and soft palate
  • airway obstruction analysis
  • sleep study interpretation
  • endoscopic airway evaluation in selected patients

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity of the disorder and may involve:

  • lifestyle modification
  • medical therapy
  • CPAP support
  • minimally invasive airway procedures
  • sleep apnea surgery in appropriate candidates

Times of India Feature

I had the opportunity to discuss the growing impact of sleep disorders and snoring-related health concerns in an article published in the Times of India.

The article highlights how chronic sleep disruption can silently affect physical health, emotional wellbeing, professional performance, and interpersonal relationships — often for years before proper diagnosis is made.
